Art and Environment: a strategy for empowering rural youth in the Maranhão savannah
Maranhão
The Carajás Forum emerged from the need to link organizations, produce and publish scientific material with useful political and environmental content for trade unions, social movements, and communities on the impacts of projects and policies in the region, especially the expansion of the agricultural frontier.
The organization targets action in the areas with the heaviest socio-environmental and economic impacts: the southeast of Pará State; the south, Lower Parnaíba Valley, and coastal area of Maranhão State; the north of Tocantins State (Bico do Papagaio); and south of Piauí State. The work consists of promoting the creation of new organizational structures leading to the improvement of inspection and monitoring by various social actors.
The Project
The project Art and Environment: a strategy for empowering rural youth in the Maranhão savannah aims to train young leaders of quilombos (communities that descend from escaped slaves) in the county of Mata Roma on agroecological issues focusing on the conservation of the ciliary forest along a creek called Riacho Estrela, and the conscientious development of the cerrado (savannah) in the State of Maranhão.
The main objective is the environmental recovery of ecosystems through initiatives to resettle the headwaters of Riacho Estrela.
The organization will produce and disseminate knowledge and information on soybean farming and its expansion in the Maranhão savannah and other projects; processes and projects needed for this expansion (biodiesel, pig iron production, hydroelectric dams); and especially the impacts on family farming. The idea is to foster reflection and interpretation of the local reality by the young leaders.
Another focus will be to link groups and organizations from the area, as well as to establish and expand relationships with other Brazilian and international organizations in order to monitor the products’ standards and legislation in the agreements.
