The Bicycle Society
Research on mobility in the host cities of the 2014 World Cup, based on a study of the Federal District: Evaluation of the mobility index of several administrative regions.
Distrito Federal
Objectives and target population:
Obtaining data for a critical analysis of mobility-related projects in host cities of the 2014 World Cup, with the Federal District as an example, is the main objective of the supported project. The aim is to report on planning failures and the risk of unnecessary expenditures toward outdated transportation systems. The group will propose efficiency and sustainability guidelines and steps forward for public policy.
Main activities:
– Collecting data on the current fleet of vehicles in the Federal District, identifying those intended for mass transit;
– Collecting data on the bus lines in and around the Federal District, mainly those that connect with the main Brasília bus station and those that provide access to the National Stadium;
– Accompanying and analyzing the conditions of bike lanes being built in the Federal District;
– Opinion research on mass transit conditions with pedestrians, bicyclists and bus, metro and taxi users;
– Elaboration of a report with all the phases of the project along with a diagnosis of current public and non-motorized transit conditions in the Federal District.
Context:
In the Federal District, geographic segregation means social segregation. One can clearly see the consolidation of the exceptionalist model of the city prevalent in the country, with the mega-sporting events, growing power of speculative capital and various violations of the right to the city as its base.
As in other cities in the country, the state’s neglect is evident in the issue of urban mobility. In practice, policies have focused on the construction of new routes or amplification of those already in place. The investment essentially in pavement, aligned with the ease of acquiring a car, causes the city to get more and more congested. Few are the initiatives to improve public transportation or to implement universally accessible bike paths.
According to the group, research is urgently needed on the Mobility Growth Acceleration Program, to align it with the National Policy on Urban Mobility and the Urban Transportation Master Plans, which are obligatory for cities wishing to receive federal funds destined to improving urban mobility.
About the organization:
The Bicycle Society was born in 2009 with the intent to multiply the political, socio-environmental, physical and mental benefits of the use of bicycles as a means of transportation. The group has had a seat on the Bicycle Mobility Policy Managing Committee of the Federal District since September of 2011, in addition to holding several different programs to encourage the use of bicycles, such as: the Go by Bike Program, which lent bicycles; the Greasy Hands Project, to train at-risk youth in bicycle repair; Cycloactivism workshops; among others.
Partnerships:
The Bicycle Society is affiliated with other collectives and the network of Popular World Cup Committees, besides being a part of the Our Brasília Movement.
