    Objetivos e público alvo

     Continuing the Popular World Cup Committee’s activities, finishing and disseminating a dossier on the impacts of the World Cup in Fortaleza, along with the production and dissemination of a pamphlet, using educational language, to be mass-distributed in training activities within communities.

    Atividades Principais

    – Research and completion of the dossier: updating information and a final revision of the local dossier’s content, done by members of the Popular World Cup Committee and partners; editing, visual identity; and printing;

    – Conversation circles to accompany the launching of the dossier: each day, a group from the organization will host us in order to discuss the impacts of the World Cup on the city according to everything that is registered in the pamphlet. Furthermore, the first day, to be accompanied by the press, will take place in a community affected by the VLT;

    – Participation in the First Encounter of those Affected by Mega-Events and Mega-Projects in Brazil.

    Contexto

    In Ceará, as in other states in Brazil, there is an enormous concentration of media outlets in the hands of a few media corporations, who, because they are principally financed by the government and private corporations, comprise a web of power involving economic, political and media stalwarts, with the latter contributing substantially to the ideological sustenance of the others.

    Thus in the current context of sporting mega-events in the city, there is a prevalent tone of praise and attempt to obscure the numerous rights violations that have occurred due to the World Cup, among them the violation of the right to housing, to work, to information, to come and go, all of which also affect the right to resistance, an outcome of the resurgence of repression. On the other hand, difficulties in the production and spreading of information on the part of social movements is extreme, despite there being more or less accessible means of communications these days, including new means of information and communications that can serve as instruments of struggle: social networks, production of videos, pamphlets, dossiers and newsletters.

    Sobre a Organização

    The Popular World Cup Committee of Fortaleza’s mission is to accompany the urban interventions caused by the 2014 World Cup in the city of Fortaleza and coordinate among agents, movements and entities involved in the struggle for the right to the city to avoid rights violations – owing to this kind of mega-event – through support for community organization, technical assistance, political protests, investigation of disinformation and demands for social participation.

    Parcerias

    The World Cup People’s Committee of Fortaleza is part of the National Network of Popular World Cup Committees (ANCOP). Entities and organizations that make up the Committee are part of several other coordinating networks such as the Yves de Roussan Center for the Defense of Children and Adolescents (Cedeca), Friar Tito de Alencar Human Rights Office, the Nigeria Collectives, Anote, the Urucum Flower Collective and Popular Councils Movement.

    Resultados

    In addition to a delegation of people afflicted by the World Cup participating at the National Meeting in Belo Horizonte, in May 2014, the project made the following activities possible: The participation of two representatives of the committee at the launch of the National Dossier of the Mega-events and Human Rights Violations in Brazil; an act by “Right to the City: Real Urban Reform”; the creation of graphic materials; the creation of a survey source map for the press; the holding of a meeting for communities concerning the right to housing.
