    Objetivos e público alvo

The project’s goal is to contribute information, mobilization and claims by residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro and, more specifically, residents of the port district, regarding the impacts of the 2014 World Cup and their rights to the city with regard to urban mobility, using reporting, articles and photographs on the issue.

    Atividades Principais

Production of articles and photos that will include interviews with locals, transportation users, community leaders who strive for their effective participation as citizens as well as intellectuals at universities involved in the area of urban mobility. All of the content produced will be republished through Favelarte’s communications channels: a blog, website and Facebook, along with the media outlets of other social organizations.

    Contexto

The port region of downtown Rio de Janeiro was abandoned for decades by the municipal government and has suffered the impacts of the urban restructuring mega-project, still underway, called Porto Maravilha (Marvelous Port). The region includes Morro da Providência, a 110-year-old community that traces its origins back to the original occupation by veterans of the Canudos War. The municipal government’s urbanization project contained an inclined plane and a suspended lift that could have helped residents: the former was canceled and the latter was executed but has been closed. The project required the removals and relocation of hundreds of residents and those remaining continue to rely on climbing and descending the hill on foot or via private transportation.

    Sobre a Organização

The Favelarte Institute looks to foment the human, social and economic development of low-income communities through the implementation of strategies that include economic solidarity, preservation and incentives for Brazilian cultural manifestations, combating poverty and the degradation of urban areas and raining youth in professional areas such as the arts and cultural production.

    Resultados

The videos that were produced managed to put the themes on the agenda of mainstream media. The joint strategy with alternative media and social organizations proved to be successful.
