    OVERVIEW

    The Brazil Human Rights Fund’s goal is to advance human rights in Brazil and raise public awareness and support for initiatives capable of creating new pathways and driving meaningful change in the country. We are committed to providing resources for institutional support and programmatic activities carried out by civil society organizations and human rights defenders throughout Brazil, with priority given to those with limited resources and/or restricted access to other sources of funding.

    PROJECT SELECTION IN 2015

    In 2015, the Brazil Human Rights Fund will award up to BRL 800,000 (eight hundred thousand reais) in grants to support projects. While priority will be given to institutional projects, the Brazil Fund may also offer individual grants, provided that the proposals meet the requirements outlined in this call.

    WHAT TYPES OF PROJECTS WILL BRAZIL FUND SUPPORT IN 2015?

    Projects aimed at combating institutional violence and discrimination.

    Projects that address institutional violence and discrimination in connection with one or more of the following focus areas: extreme labor exploitation, forced labor, and child labor; police violence and violence perpetrated by militias or death squads; torture and extrajudicial executions; lack of access to land and territory; democratization of access to justice; violations of socio-environmental rights; the criminalization of civil society organizations and social movements; violence against human rights defenders; discrimination in access to public services; discrimination based on gender, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation; discrimination based on economic status; and efforts to combat religious intolerance.

    Projects with a total budget of no less than BRL 20,000 (twenty thousand reais) and no more than BRL 40,000 (forty thousand reais), and a duration of up to one year.

    Projects submitted by organizations with an annual revenue of no more than BRL 700,000 (seven hundred thousand reais), as our priority is to support organizations with limited resources.

    WHAT ELEMENTS WILL BE CONSIDERED IN THE PROJECT SELECTION PROCESS?

    • Alignment with the focus of the call;
    • Intended social impact;
    • Potential multiplier effect of the project;
    • Creativity, innovation, and overall consistency of the proposal;
    • Connections with local, regional, or national networks, forums, and coalitions
    • Existence of strong ties with the communities to which the proposal relates;
    • Alignment between the proposal and the actual needs of the community or target population directly benefiting from the project;
    • Credibility and legitimacy of the group, organization, or individual proposing to carry out the activities;
    • The applicant’s capacity to implement the proposed project;
    • Regional diversity.

    FORMAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

    Proposals from individuals and non-profit social organizations will be accepted, including those that are not yet formally registered and/or do not have a CNPJ (Brazilian National Registry of Legal Entities number), provided that they meet the other requirements outlined in this call.

    Projects that do not align with the focus of this call, as well as projects submitted by government agencies, universities, international organizations, political parties, or companies will not be supported.

    HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT:

    Applicants must complete the application form found on the back of this call and mail it to the Brazil Fund’s address no later than February 27, 2015. Only submissions sent by mail will be accepted. Applicants are requested to submit two printed copies of the completed form. The completed application form must also be accompanied by a signed letter of recommendation from another organization or individual endorsing the project. Applicants are further requested to provide the names of two references, including their mailing addresses and telephone numbers, who can provide information about the applicant organization or individual.

    Each organization may submit only one project.

    Projects postmarked after the above deadline will not be considered.

    WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A PROJECT IS SUBMITTED TO THE BRAZIL FUND?

    The Brazil Fund team reviews all submitted materials and, if necessary, may request additional information or clarification from the applicant. Projects will be analyzed and then forwarded to a Selection Committee composed of experts. The Committee will meet to recommend which projects should be supported. The final decisions rest with the Brazil Fund Board of Trustees.

    The results of the selection process will be announced on the Brazil Fund website starting July 2, 2015.
