The actions include the accompaniment of legal processes, charting of vulnerabilities, and creation of safe reporting protocols. The priority target group is quilombola* leaders and their communities, who face threats of land-grabbing, racial violence, and pressures from the agribusiness.
*Traditional communities descended from runaway enslaved people.
Contexto
The quilombola communities in Rio Grande do Sul face a scenario of violence and structural racism, with threats of land-grabbing, arsons, and political pressures that aim to destabilize the possession of their lands. Quilombola leaders especially have been targeted by persecutions and death threats, while institutional racism hinders the access to basic rights and the titling of lands. IACOREQ, which has acted for over 25 years in defense of these communities, seeks to strengthen quilombola security and autonomy in the face of these challenges.
