Human Rights Defenders: Institutional Development for Comprehensive Security Call for Proposal (2024)

    Objetivos e público alvo

It aims to ensure the comprehensive security of leaders and residents of the Rio dos Macacos Quilombo, a community historically threatened by militarization and violence. The actions include the maintenance of security cameras, installation of reflectors, acquisition of amateur radios, construction of walls with alarm sensors and access gates, as well as the purchase of institutional cellphones for leaders. The priority target group is quilombola families who suffer with the lack of state protection and daily violence.

    Contexto

The Rio dos Macacos Quilombo faces decades of violence, invasions, threats, and psychological torture, worsened by the presence of the Navy, which controls access to the territory. The community, titled in 2020, has not yet received basic public policies and lives in a situation of extreme vulnerability. The lack of illumination, security, and infrastructure exposes the residents to constant risks, such as murders, rapes, and invasions. The project seeks to create mechanisms of self-protection in face of the State’s omission.

    Sobre a Organização

The Association of Remaining Members of the Rio dos Macacos Quilombo was founded to defend the rights of quilombola families, ensuring their permanence in the traditional territory. The organization fights against racism, gender violence, and political exclusion, articulating with social movements and human rights defense networks. Mainly comprised of Black quilombola women, the association promotes actions of resistance and visibility to the community’s demands.
