Objetivos e público alvo
The “Raízes Livres” project aims to fight racism, LGBTphobia and the violation of local peoples’ rights, focusing in Black, quilombola*, terreiro**, and LGBTQIAPN+ communities in Cururupu, Maranhão, through educational, cultural and political actions. The priority target group is people in situations of social vulnerability, including women, youths and LGBTQIAPN+ people, who face discrimination, violence and exclusion.

Contexto
Cururupu, in Maranhão, is a region marked by social inequalities, structural racism and LGBTphobia. The Cururupu Resistance Group, created in 2017, acts in tackling these violations, offering legal, psychological and social assistance. The requested resources will be used in the implementation of the region’s first Shelter House for LGBTQIAPN+ people, as well as to undertake the charting of babalorixás and yalorixás*** of Cururupu, to promote the II Diversity Parade, to elaborate a dictionary with words and expressions in Yoruba used in terreiros and local communities, and to realize the Gathering of Pais and Mães de Santo**** of the Coast.

Sobre a Organização
The Cururupu Resistance Group is comprised of Black, LGBTQIA+ and terreiro leaders. The organization has been in activity since 2017 promoting events such as the Diversity Week and the Diversity Parade, as well as supporting terreiros in the procurement of legal personality. It takes part in the city secretariats of Health, Women and Culture, as well as OAB/MA (the Brazilian Legal Bar Association) commissions, such as the Commission of Sexual and Gender Diversity. The group is also associated with five terreiros and conducts research on the intersectionality of race, gender and religiosity.
