Objetivos e público alvo

 Developing activities to stimulate and mobilize the Planalto Pici community to participate actively in the struggle for the right to dignified housing, which has been threatened by real estate speculation and worsened due to mega-events.

Atividades Principais

– Visits to residents of the neighborhood to spread the word about the project and offer enrollment in upcoming workshops;

– Thematic Workshops: Increase in real estate speculation as a consequence of mega-events; right to the city (the city we have and city we want); land title normalization; workshop on the legal and social concept of special social interest zones (known in Portuguese by the acronym Zeis), such as the Pici Zeis.

Contexto

The Planalto Pici neighborhood, in Fortaleza (CE), is one of several existing occupations of public land in the city whose ownership and title have yet to be normalized. Its thousands of residents have lived through this uncertainty for nearly twenty years. There have been in that time several attempts to mobilize the families by existing community groups, in order to make them aware of the need for organization to meet and make demands from municipal, state and federal authorities for the right to dignified housing.

Because of the Confederations Cup and World Cup, substantial investments of public resources into the modernization of stadiums, airports and urban transportation infrastructure have contributed directly to a rise in property values in the city, generating intense real estate speculation in areas yet to be normalized, threatening populations throughout the city who are still struggling for the right to housing, particularly in Planalto Pici. In this sense, it is necessary to strengthen the process of training and mobilizing the affected population so that they organize in their quest for the right to the city through normalization of title in the neighborhood and the implementation of the ZEIS in Pici.

Sobre a Organização

The mission of the Family Development Group is to make it possible for children, adolescents and their families to strengthen their social ties through socio-cultural, recreational and faith-based activities in order to become agents of transformation within society and overcome social exclusion.

Parcerias

The group is affiliated with the Movement of People’s Councils (MCP); campaign for decent housing in the city of Fortaleza; the World Cup People’s Committees; the Social Service of Commerce (SESC) network and Basic Ecclesial Communities.

Resultados

The strengthening of the organization and the solidarity among residents was an important step made possible by the project, with the formation of a residents’ commission and the decision to participate in meetings held by the Front for Decent Housing in Fortaleza. The commitment of the participants and guests in contributing to the work, as well as reflections, resulting from the workshops that were held was also significant. There they showed an interest in knowing more about rights related to themes such as housing, land regularization, affordable housing and real estate speculation. Other highlights include the participation of representatives from other movements and entities, the involvement of volunteers and the dissemination of the work to community entities.
