Contexto

According to data on Homophobic Violence in Brazil: 2012, prepared by the Secretariat of Human Rights, reports of violence have increased 234% in the state compared to 2011, placing Rio de Janeiro on the 13th position in the ranking. In the year 2014, the LGBT Citizenship Centers performed 3,899 assistances. In the case of slums, prejudice and discrimination are increasing. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, the Rio Without Homophobia program has its work aimed at middle class population. However, the slum population don´t usually take part in these actions. We still need to shout out “allow me to exist!” The population of slums, particularly the LGBT population, still does not benefit from the advances in public policies. We need to build a platform to be used by this segment as a place where they can present their demands and needs.

Sobre a Organização

Since its inception, the group acts to ensure and promote citizenship and human rights to the LGBT population in slums and other areas, especially in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Based in the most complex slum in Rio, Maré, the group came under an initiative developed in partnership with Promundo called Youth for Gender Equity, which worked on subjects related to this theme in work environments (interference, inequalities, etc.). The organization works with the LGBT population, with innovative and relevant elements for the prevention of STD/HIV and promote human rights.
