Human Rights Defenders: Institutional Development for Comprehensive Security Call for Proposal (2024)

    Objetivos e público alvo

The project aims to strengthen the comprehensive security and mobilization of communities affected by the Sinop Hydroelectric Plant (UHE) and threatened by the Castanheira UHE. Activities such as exchanges between communities, trainings in human rights, production of audiovisual materials, and a regional human rights defenders’ gathering will be conducted. The priority target group is the families from Gleba Mercedes V Settlement and from the communities of Pedreira and Palmital, who face rights violations and threats due to hydroelectric enterprises.

    Contexto

The Movement of People Affected by Dams has acted in Mato Grosso since 2014, fighting against rights violations caused by hydroelectric plants. The Sinop UHE has caused devastating impacts, such as forced displacements, unjust compensations, and environmental damages, including fish mortality and frequent burnings. On the other hand, the Castanheira UHE, in its licensing phase, threatens rural and Indigenous communities in the region of Rio Arinos. The movement faces criminalization, prohibitive interdictions, and threats by politicians and local businessmen.

    Sobre a Organização

Founded in 1991, The Movement of People Affected by Dams (MAB) is a national organization that fights for the energetic sovereignty and rights of communities affected by dams. In Mato Grosso, MAB acts with grassroots groups, promoting trainings, mobilizations, and reports against rights violations. The board of directors is comprised of liberated militants, community leaders, and volunteers, with gender balance and strong participation of youths.
