Objetivos e público alvo
The project aims to protect the territory of Quilombo Vila Nova, located in the middle coast of Rio Grande do Sul, through the elaboration, publication and divulgation of the Autonomous Protocol for Consultation and Free, Previous and Informed Consent. The priority target group are the 14 quilombola* families that comprise the community, threatened by wind-energy and mining mega-projects.
*Traditional communities descended from runaway enslaved peoples.
Contexto
The Vila Nova Quilombo, with over 200 years of history, faces serious threats to its survival due to three mega-projects that seek to operate in their territory: two wind-energy complexes and a titanium mining project. These enterprises violate the right to free, previous and informed consultation, guaranteed by Convention 169 of OIT. Moreover, the community suffers the impacts of the climate emergency, such as cyclones, droughts, and excessive rainfall, that hinder family agriculture, their main means of subsistence. The requested resources will be used to finalize, diagram, and publish the Consultation Protocol, strengthening the fight for the recognition of cultural and land rights for the community.
Sobre a Organização
The Quilombo Vila Nova Community Association was founded in 2023 by 30 quilombola associates, with the objective of protecting the land and traditional ways of life. The community is part of the Quilombola Forum of the Middle Coast of Rio Grande do Sul, The Family Farmers Cooperative of São José do Norte (COOAFAN), and the Committee for Fighting Mega Mining in RS. The association is comprised of quilombola leaders, with emphasis in women like Vanuza Silveira Machado, who represent the community in regional and national events.
