Human Rights Defenders: Institutional Development for Comprehensive Security Call for Proposal (2024)

    Objetivos e público alvo

It aims to strengthen the comprehensive security of women and young militants of the MAM (Movement for Popular Sovereignty in Mining) in the territories of Baixo Amazonas and Tapajós, through trainings in digital security, care and selfcare, and popular communication. The actions include the creation of security plans, production of supporting materials (guides, videos, podcasts) and the promotion of mental health and non-violent conflict resolution practices. The priority target group is community leaders, women and youths who face threats from agrarian-hydro-mining projects and gender violences, race violences, and LGBTphobia.

    Contexto

The Baixo Amazonas and Tapajós region is marked by territorial and environmental conflicts, with the presence of large mining, agribusiness, and hydroelectric projects that threaten the traditional ways of life and local communities’ rights. Community leaders, especially women and youths, face co-option, disinformation, sexism, racism, and LGBTphobia, as well direct threats to their physical and emotional integrity. The Raízes Collective MAM has acted since 2019 in defense of these lands, promoting popular resistance and organization against predatory exploitation.

    Sobre a Organização

The Raízes Baixo Amazonas/Tapajós Collective MAM is a grassroots nucleus of the Movement for Popular Sovereignty in Mining, acting in the communities of PAE Lago Grande, PAE Juruti Velho and peri-urban areas of Santarém. The organization promotes socioenvironmental education, the defense of human rights, and community articulation against agrarian-hydro-mining projects. Comprised by communication collectives, youths, women, and territories, MAM takes part in networks such as Via Campesina Brazil and the National Committee in Defense of Territories Against Mining.
