Amotrans-PE (Transvestite and Transsexual Network and Movement of Pernambuco)

2nd Pernambuco Trans People’s Day

Objectives and target audience

Promotion of a seminar to form the Trans People’s Statute. The document will serve as the basis for dialogue with eleven municipalities in the metropolitan region of Recife and elsewhere in Pernambuco. These localities are regarded as the most violent for the trans population. Series of debates will be promoted to discuss combating violence against transvestite and transsexual women.

Main activities

– Planning and organizing activities for the 2nd Pernambuco Trans People’s Day (seminar and debates) together with partners in eleven municipalities.
– The seminar should occur in Palmares at the launch of the project.
– Creation of the Trans People’s Statute (a document based on the Diversity Statute created by the Brazilian Organization of Lawyers (OAB), with events to combat violence and specifically guarantee the citizenship and rights of transvestite and transsexual women).

Transvestites and trans people are among the top of the mortality indices of LGBT populations. There are no specific mechanisms to protect this population, marginalized by state measures and defenseless against hate crimes. Trans women need their rights guaranteed.

About the organization

Amotrans-PE’s leadership consists of transsexuals and transvestites. Furthermore, it has daily contact with the population in question, both in carrying out projects previously developed and in activism that defines the opinions and values that guide its activities.

As planned, the project was launched at a seminar held in Palmares. Then debate circles were held in Recife and ten municipalities in the metropolitan area, making it possible to train information multiplicators. Participants received the Statute of Transpeople. The organization spoke with human rights directors, social workers, municipal coordinators in the areas of women and health, community health workers, administrative workers and technical assistants.
