    Right to Land

    Objetivos e público alvo

    The project looks to empower communities, movements and popular organizations for the defense and conquest of their rights through the socialization of political and legal knowledge that contributes to the abilities of their leadership. The idea is to provide those involved in the struggle for land and access to and participation in public policies in such a way as to contribute to the qualified intervention of their representatives in the public arena.

    Atividades Principais

    • A “layman lawyers” course that will debate themes such as the State, rights and social movements; and the right to land and property;
    • Elaboration of printed materials that deal with political and technical issues;
    • A general meeting to evaluate and coordinate among the participating communities in order to jointly forward relevant issues.

    Contexto

    One of the greatest obstacles faced by popular movements in their struggles to attain and solidify their rights continues to be the monopoly of legal knowledge on the part of certain societal sectors. Holding courses such as “layman lawyers” has been conceived, in part, to assist in the comprehension and political-legal training of popular movements, contributing to their access to information about their rights and critical reflection.

    This way it is possible to reinforce their courage to take on the justice system, the authorities and the State. Considering the context of serious property conflicts that course participants have experienced, the organization sees that sharing legal knowledge, commonly inaccessible to these communities, organizations and popular movements, may contribute to the democratization of access to justice and in dialogue with the organs of the State.

    Sobre a Organização

    The Center for the Communitarian Associations of the Bahian Semi-arid Regions (COASB) looks to achieve agrarian reform based on solidarity, sustainability and respect for the environment, offering the possibility of a quality, dignified life to the men and women of the rural areas.

    Parcerias

    Besides being a network partner, the group is also a member of GREPS — Regional Network of Productive Groups of the People’s Solidary Economy — who are active in the macroregion Senhor do Bonfim in Bahia.
