    Objetivos e público alvo

Contributing to the reintegration of Goiás Committee activities for the End of Police Violence – involving organized civil society, relatives of those disappeared following police apprehension and government entities, such as the Public Prosecutor and Human Rights Defense Commission of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Goiás.

    Atividades Principais

    – Mapping new cases: through news clipping and daily accompaniment of the principal newspapers in circulation and weekly contact with the Human Rights Defense Commission of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Goiás and the Citizenship Defense Commission.

    – Legal accompaniment: acting to assist the prosecution in cases of homicide and disappearance involving police violence; creating a dossier to raise the profile of cases of extermination in Goiás, allowing for the clarification and circulation of information about cases followed by the Committee.

    – Mobilizations with relatives and the community through public acts and discussion groups in the neighborhoods of the families.

    Contexto

The state of Goiás gained notoriety in Brazilian news due to a Federal Police investigation of an extermination group that had existed for years in the region. The criminal organization, accused of homicide, influence peddling, gang activities, corruption and concealing corpses, is formed by eighteen public agents.

The increase in the rate of police homicides, the lessening of punitive measures and the high rate of process archiving, both in the scope of the police forces or even in the judiciary, lends credence to the activities of the Goiás Committee for the end of Police Violence, which since 2006 has acted in solidarity and in search of justice.

    Sobre a Organização

Cerrado Popular Legal Assistance (Cerrado AJP) is a network of legal professionals that, since 2004, has offered assistance and legal guidance to so-called “vulnerable groups” mentioned in the National Human Rights Plans, such as rural workers, families affected by dam construction, squatters, family farmers, indigenous peoples, afro- and quilombo-descendant groups and the families and victims of police violence.

    Parcerias

Cerrado Popular Legal Assistance is affiliated with the National Network of Popular Lawyers/RENAP; Citizenship Defense Commission; and the Goiás Committee for the End of Police Violence.

    Resultados

O Cerrado has remained active in cases of police violence that they have been following since 2004. Almost 200 cases have been attended to by the organization since then. These are processes that last several years before they can be concluded. Some work fronts require greater attention from the team of lawyers and were attended to with the support of the project.
