Maria dos Anjos Center for the Defense of the Child and Adolescent – CDCA-RO

Making the difference in the defense of the human rights of children and adolescents who have been victims of socio-environmental impacts of large infrastructure projects and incarcerated adolescents in Porto Velho

Rondônia

Objetivos e público prioritário

Guarantee the rights of children and adolescents who have been victims of flooding by the Madeira River, which occurred in April 2014, due to the installation of the Jirau and Santo Antônio hydroelectric dams, and confronting the human rights violations against adolescents serving sentences under the juvenile detention regime.

Main activities

• Supplementary action with the State Public Defender through the judicialization of social policies in cases forwarded by Advisory Councils and social services in the child and adolescent protection network of Porto Velho;
• Popular legal assistance
• Accompaniment and monitoring of juvenile detention units in Porto Velho;
• Coordination and networking for the involvement of other rights monitoring actors, such as the State Public Prosecutor, OAB (Brazilian Lawyers Organization) and Federal University.

About the organization

CDCA-RO is a non-governmental organization that promotes and defends the human rights of children and adolescents. The NGO acts through social-legal intervention, coordination, mobilization and participation in social control, for the guarantee of the wholescale protection of children and adolescents.

Results

The project’s activities enabled the mobilization of local actors with no established cooperation between each other, in addition to the reverbation in the press regarding the topic of juvenile justice, raising the population’s awareness of the problems within the socio-educational system. The instructional processes were strategic and attracted public officials and policy makers to dialog, presenting aspects that could be improved within the system in place to ensure rights. The visits to the inpatient units favored approaching the teenagers and made their participation possible as subjects of rights, allowing them to be heard. Relatives of the teenagers were welcomed and supported by the Center for the Defense of Children and Adolescents.
