Race and youth in Northeast Brazil: dialogue with new visions

Rio Grande do Norte

Founded in 1999 in the city of Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte, the Young Chants’s mission is to contribute to the participation of adolescents and young people through the development of a Culture of Rights

The organization promotes social mobilization with adolescents and young people and conducts artistic-pedagogical, political and educational workshops with youth groups within the following thematic programs: Sexual and Reproductive Health, Youths, Participation and Democracy, and Arts, Culture and Education.

Additionally, the group participates in public policies’ councils, forums and networks of political articulation, and produces educational and communicational materials, investing in the debate on race and gender in all its trainings. The group also has the TV Program Youth Dialogues, which promotes the inclusion of those
issues in the debate among youths, experts and public managers.

Project

With the project, the group plans to mobilize the afro-descendant youth and create the dialogue space “Colloquium Race and Youth in the Northeast” to strengthen the human rights movement for this segment.

According to Young Chant, with the development of the theme of youth, especially since the decade of 2000, many human rights and racial equality organizations, networks and movements have created their instances/groups/specific fields by/for young people, giving rise to the debate between the juvenile condition and the social condition of being an afro-descendant.

Currently, even though the National Forum of Afro-Descendant Youth (resulting from Enjune – National Meeting of Afro-Descendant Youth) is one of the spaces of large congregation of political forces in the field of the discussion about youth and race, there are yet other spaces that debate and raise similar and related flags, but which maintain little dialogue between them. Political dialogue and alliances are necessary to the fight for indivisible rights.

In this sense, the project proposes a space for dialogue and systematization of information in order to disseminate the agenda of youth movements.
