    Contexto

Mato Grosso do Sul holds a high index of murders, prejudice and violence against youth. According to the Map of Violence 2011, Coronel Sapucaia, a city in Mato Grosso do Sul at the border with Paraguay, has the highest average rates of youth homicide in Brazil, reaching 107.2 (per 100 thousand). Campo Grande, the capital, has a youth homicide rate of 60.6 (per 100 thousand) and a suicide rate of 5.8 (per 100 thousand). Death among young people in traffic accidents reached 44.8/100 thousand. The number of adolescents in youth detention centers ranges from 100-150. Human rights violations are frequent in these centers.

In the urban context, Campo Grande is marked by police violence against Black and poor youth, especially in the city’s outskirts. In the countryside, the situation is also serious concerning conflicts over land and indigenous issues. Regarding violence against women, despite the lack of specific data, the state occupies the ninth place in terms of number of murdered women.

Social movements find it difficult to report and draw the attention of authorities to the youth situation, mainly due to the common sense that discriminates and criminalizes those young people. This is the starting point of our work aimed at the organization of a campaign to raise awareness on the youth situation and report it to governmental authorities in general.
