Brazil faces an alarming moment for human rights. According to a global report by Amnesty International, the country has registered over 3,4 million possible violations in 2023 — a 41% increase with relation to the previous year. The data gathering points out that the country remains with one of the highest levels of inequality in the world, affecting especially Black and Indigenous peoples, local communities, women and trans people.
In light of this scenario, the Brazil Human Rights Fund is launching the “Human Rights are what unites us” campaign, an initiative that invites society to reflect and act, mobilizing resources for organizations that act, every day, in the defense of fundamental rights throughout the country.
The campaign aims to show that, despite the differences between people — be they social, cultural, racial or gender-based —, human rights are a common element that must guarantee dignity, justice and equality for anyone. More than a fundraising action, the campaign reinforces that human rights are not privileges, but fundamental needs for a dignified life, that must be defended by society.
“Change only happens when we join a collective purpose. Human rights are what unites us. When we guarantee justice, dignity and equality, we are building a more democratic country for all”, highlights Vania Schoemberner, Fundraising director for the Brazil Human Rights Fund.
Within the following months, the campaign will use posts, photos and videos to emphasize the importance of strengthening and supporting human rights, showing how the worsening of inequalities and violations demands a collective response. And that a simple gesture, such as a donation, can make a difference in the fight for justice, dignity and equality for all.
Since its creation, the Brazil Human Rights Fund has already supported over 1.860 projects in many regions, strengthening collectives that fight racism, defend the rights of women, Indigenous populations, the LGBTQIAPN+ community and rural workers. It also invests in initiatives geared towards socioenvironmental justice and the tackling of institutional violence, the defense of youth’s rights, the fight for dignified housing, and decent work.
