On Friday 25 June, Brazil Fund published the list of projects chosen for the 2021 call for applications – Moving Forward with Rights. Twenty initiatives in 13 states from five regions of Brazil will receive support of up to R$40 thousand each.

Artwork with the name of the project: 2021 MOVING FORWARD WITH RIGHTS. CHECK OUT THE LIST OF SELECTED PROJECTS

2021 – Moving Forward with Rights is Brazil Fund´s 14th call for applications. This line of support is the foundation´s most wide-ranging one and it includes a broad diversity of causes and strategies for tackling institutional violence and different forms of discrimination. For the first time in 14 years, the call for applications is aimed at institutional support, in other words maintaining the work that the organisations, collectives and groups are already doing.

In this round of applications, Brazil Fund is prioritising support for grassroots initiatives with little or no access to other resources. Around 1 thousand proposals were received.

Further information on the selection process

Brazil Fund´s choice of projects is carried out using methodology that prioritises the vision of activists working in relevant areas on diverse human rights agendas.

The first phase of the selection process is a triage to identify each proposal´s suitability for the call for applications.

Brazil Fund then calls in an external independent Selection Committee. The Committee for the 2021 call for applications – Moving Forward with Rights,  was made up of the following participants: Ana Paula Rosário, do Odara Institute of Black Women and the channel Political Body (Bahia); Andrey Lemos, from the National LGBT Union (Federal District); Bia Onça, director at the House for Black Women – the Centre for Women´s Issues (Rio de Janeiro); Carolina Motoki, who works at the Pastoral Land Commission (São Paulo); Guilherme Gomes Ferreira, LGBTQIA+ activist (Rio Grande do Sul); Paulo Pankararu, indigenous lawyer (Pernambuco/São Paulo); Rosenilde Gregoria, from the Inter-state Movement of the Babaçu Coconut Breakers (Maranhão) and Sabrina Mesquita do Nascimento, Amazônia researcher (Pará).

“Vulnerable communities are currently experiencing a worsening in the conflicts that affect them”, said the activist Andrey Lemos. Talking about the task of selecting 20 projects from the large number of proposals he said: “In addition to the criteria set out in the call for applications itself, we thought about promoting the widest possible diversity across the proposals suggested for support: ethnic/racial, gender, urban/rural and subject matter”.

The Selection Committee recommends the projects to receive support. The final decision is taken by the Brazil Fund Administrative Board.

According to Jurema Werneck, President of the Brazil Fund Administrative Board, the general call for applications “has an element of investment, of banking on the work of the grassroots groups of civil society and this is the value and relevance of the programme.”

    More about the result

The Northeast region has the largest number of projects receiving support, with 7 selected proposals: 2 in Bahia; 2 in Ceará; 1 in Paraíba, 1 in Piauí and 1 in Rio Grande do Norte.

Next come the North regions, with 6: 3 in Pará; 2 in Amazonas and 1 in Acre. And the Southeast, with 5 selected initiatives: 3 in São Paulo; 1 in Espírito Santo and 1 in Minas Gerais.

The Central-West with Goiás and the South with Santa Catarina, have 1 project each.

The 2021 call for applications – Moving Forward with Rights is supporting groups for the defence of women´s rights; tackling racism, the rights of the indigenous peoples; quilombola and traditional communities; fair and sustainable towns; freedom of sexual orientation and gender identity; land and territory and the guarantee of rule of law.

It is worth mentioning that all the projects converse with the current understanding that there is a need to take a transversal approach to the different human rights violations in Brazil and as such they touch on a number of human rights themes.
