Brazil Fund in partnership with Ford Foundation, held in early April the conference “Strategic Litigation in Human Rights”, where the attendees debated theoretical, legal and political aspects related to the topic. The conference was supported by FGV Law SP.

The auditorium was crowded and we organized two debates, which were coordinated by Jorge Eduardo Durão, the Brazil Fund’s CEO, providing reflection on strategic litigation, advocacy and communication for the promotion, protection and defense of human rights.

Strategic litigation concerns the transformation of reality beyond one specific case. There are various forms of strategic litigation besides the Judiciary: in the legislature, in private cases and regulatory agencies, for example. This type of litigation can pursue many different goals.

Representatives of the eleven projects supported by Brazil Fund through a specific call targeting this theme attended the conference and the debates promoted during the two days of the event. In these discussions, strategic litigation cases were presented, discussed, and further developed with the support of the two foundations.

The presented cases were related to the following themes: “The right to land and territory”, “The right to the city”, “The right of children and adolescents” and “Sexual and reproductive rights.”
