On Thursday 9 September, the Alliance between Funds – which brings together the Baobá Fund for Racial Equality, Brazil Human Rights Fund and the Casa Socioambiental Fund – held its first joint action – the simultaneous launch of calls for applications exclusively for quilombola and indigenous communities in vulnerable conditions that have been aggravated by Covid-19. This is an unprecedented, innovative initiative of collaborative philanthropy in Brazil.

Brazil Human Rights Fund and the Casa Socioambiental Fund are launching the Call for Applications in Defence of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Call for Projects to Support Quilombola Communities in Tackling the Impacts caused by Covid, respectively. By the end of September, the Baobá Fund will be launching the call for applications, Quilombolas in defence of life, rights and justice, with a value of R$ 1 million.

The Right to Land and Territory

The Brazil Fund´s Call for Applications in Defence of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, will select at least 10 projects to receive up to R$ 50 thousand, for a maximum period of 12 months. The total sum available for this programme is R$500 thousand. The aim is to support indigenous communities and organisations whose focus is the right to land and territory for exclusive usufruct of the natural resources on indigenous lands and the defence of rights and the strengthening of indigenous communities, organisations and leadership. The objective is to bolster indigenous communities and organisations in light of the pandemic. Registration will be open on 09/09 and interested parties can send their projects by 07/10. Community resilience and food sovereignty

The Casa Socioambiental Fund´s Call for Projects to Support Quilombola Communities in Tackling the Impacts caused by Covid, will choose 33 projects to receive up to R$ 30 thousand each. The total sum available for this programme is R$ 1 million. The aim is to support organisations, groups and collectives of black people and quilombolas, in the North and Northeast of the country, by means of initiatives that contribute to economic recuperation and sustainability, the promotion of food sovereignty and security, community resilience and the defence of rights in quilombola communities. Projects must meet the following specific outlines: the recuperation of income of groups that work with solidarity-based economy and collective business, as well as fostering strategies of community resilience and actions and methodologies that strengthen the food sovereignty of these communities. Registration will be open from 09/09 and interested parties can send their projects by 9/10.  To read the full call for applications, click here.

About the Alliance
The Alliance between Funds is an unprecedented initiative that was recently launched in Brazil. For the first time, three funds – Baobá Fund for Racial Equality, Brazil Human Rights Fund and the Casa Socioambiental Fund – have come together to promote an important contribution of direct funds to indigenous people and quilombola communities, who have been rendered more vulnerable by the pandemic. The initial contribution is R$ 2.5 million, to be distributed through several different programmes.

As well as increasing support to innovative projects tackling the impact of the pandemic, the Alliance of Funds also increases the outreach of actions, especially in more isolated areas.
