Conceição das Crioulas Quilombola Association
The struggle against environmental racism and enforcement of quilombo (maroon community) land rights
Pernambuco
The association seeks to promote the development of Conceição das Crioulas and the rights of the quilombo community, strengthening the political organization, the ethnic and cultural identities and the fight for the “quilombo” cause.
The AQCC participates in forums, public events, seminars and local, regional and national conferences based on the issue of quilombo territory. Apart from this, it holds regular meetings with Incra in Petrolina (Pernambuco) to monitor the land regularization process and has participated in the completion of the draft law on education of quilombo communities.
The group also promotes workshops of dancing, drawing and manufacture of percussion materials, and edits and publishes the newspaper “Crioulas”. In the agro-ecological field, the group participates in the exchange of experiences with small farms and other quilombo communities to address organic garden, adequate handling of the soil, planting, mixed stands, etc.
Project
The project goal is to promote human rights education, liaision and action of quilombo communities in São Francisco de Pernambuco and the Central arid hinterland.
Activities will aim at combating environmental racism expressed in the region by the negligence of the State to title the land of quilombo communities. It is also manifested in the disrespect for ethnic and cultural rights and the implementation of large projects, such as hydroelectric plants and irrigation and transposition canals which will deprive the communities of their land.
Workshops will be offered on the following topics: “Ethnic Recognition and Land’s Right”, “Preparing a Diagnose of Emblematic Cases regarding Land’s Right”, “Environmental Racism in the Arid Hinterlands of Pernambuco”, among others.
The education of the community will ensure their influence in cases of ethnic recognition and land titling, as well as guaranteeing the collective building of strategies for facing rights’ violations.

Ministry of Environment, Brasília, 2006).
(2) Incra stands for National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Instituto Nacional de Colonização e Reforma Agrária).
